Signed and dated on the left. -- With 2 minor marginal tears outside of the pictures, otherwise in good condition. // G. A. Hjorth was a 19th century Norwegian artist. He lived abroad from 1867 until returning to Norway in 1915, aged 72. Upon his return, his strange life story was widely circulated in the newspapers: He had spent a total of 34 years in prison for theft. Before the graduation age in 1858, he had already had five convictions. In 1860 he arrived at the Botsfengselet. He obviously had some artistic talent, because Eckersberg took an interest in him and took him on as a free student when he came out of prison. Only Eckersberg himself knew his past, and according to a fellow student, it happened that tubes and brushes disappeared, among other things from Philip Barlag's painting box. Major thefts sent Hjorth in the Bots prison again in 1862. In his cell he also painted and decorated furnace screens and various household items, which were sold at the prison's outlets along with some of his paintings. After this prison stay, Eckersberg took care of him again, hoping to save him from further escapades and help him as an artist. He also helped him with money. But the environment in Christiania eventually became too cramped for H., and he first went to Copenhagen and from there on to the continent. Eventually, he built up a solid career as a hotel and gentleman thief. The Oslo City Museum has a painting, a watercolor and a millennial work by H., and Cappelen's collection, the Oslo municipal art collections, has two works. The motifs are urban motifs from Christiania, among others. He has certainly painted some also in the years 1867-1915. However, any work is difficult to trace because it is known that he often used false names, such as Holm, von Holm and the like.
